I'm also playing the definitive edition, so some of that time was doing Tickington quests, but I also haven't completed 100% of those. I also think act 3 is absolutely worth it. Yes, it does diminish some of the more complex, deeper themes of act 2, but this is done very much in the time-honored spirit of Dragon Quest.

In my opinion, if you have Stronger Monsters enabled, I'd recommend doing a couple of the Drustan Trials. They'll help your characters get a bit stronger and should help you against some of the Act 3 side quest bosses.
